Before the winter ...

... you need to be prepared.

The surfaces of BMW products are of a high quality. Whether they are made of metal, an inherently coloured material, or treated with a surface coating, the finish is always of the highest quality. Nevertheless, the effects of salt, moisture and temperature extremes can take their toll any material.

Should you choose to store your motorcycle over the winter months, and you have the option, then keep it in a place that is warm and dry, or at the very least, dry. A cover is only recommended if there is sufficient space underneath it to allow air to circulate. Otherwise there is an increased risk of condensation followed by corrosion. If you want to play it safe, then spray it with a thin dusting with a light oil, such as bicycle polishing oil (clear red spray). The metal surfaces in particular will then be better protected from corrosion.

When the spring comes, you should wash your motorcycle thoroughly with lukewarm water and a little mild detergent and a soft sponge, to remove the residual oil. For further valuable hints, ask your local BMW Motorrad dealer.

Winter care

If you intend to use your motorcycle in winter, then it makes little sense to spray it in oil. The best thing would be to clean residual salt and snow off regularly and to perform the usual maintenance on a more frequent basis. If you wish to use a high-pressure cleaner, then be careful that you do not point the jet directly at the intake pipe and bearings. Again, BMW Motorrad offers you much valuable assistance.

Relieving the chassis

To prevent continuous pressure on the tyres and springs for months on end, it is recommended that you support you motorcycle on its main stand over the winter.

To avoid the tyres going flat, it is sufficient to rock the motorcycle gently from time to time, even if standing in a restricted space.

Battery charge

If your motorcycle is placed in storage for an extended period, the battery charge will weaken. Traditionally, it was necessary to remove the battery and store it indoors, in a warm place and then to recharge it for the next season. Nowadays there are excellent charge preservation units available, which can generally be connected directly to the battery without having to remove it – provided an electric power point is available nearby.

Fluids

The synthetic oils that are used in your BMW are not only extremely durable but they prove extremely effective in winter, when the motorcycle is no longer moving. They are quickly ready for use after a break of several months, and only require a short warm-up phase.

If your fuel tank is made of metal, it is recommended that you fill it up before storing it for the winter. This will prevent any moisture from condensing on the inner surface, which can lead to corrosion. If your tank is made of a synthetic material, this is not necessary. If your engine is of the carburettor type, you should disconnect the fuel pipe from the tank to the carburettor and drain any fuel from the carburettor, to prevent it from becoming resinous. With modern injection engines, such as are found in the entire BMW range, these special winter measures are not required
