Bike preparation

Touring participant's bikes will obviously carry more weight and work harder than usual, so pre-tour checking and preparation are essential for a troublefree tour. Breaking down in mid-tour can sometimes be traumatic but is an unpleasant experience, at best.

Check if the bike is due a scheduled service - but get one done anyway. It will prevent many potential problems and provide peace of mind. Check brake pads and replace if necessary, particularly if you expect to ride in mountainous regions.

If the bike is not equipped with shaft drive, check and adjust the chain. Replace if necessary. A heavy payload, twisty scenic roads, abrasive road surfaces and high temperatures mean greater tyre wear. Check the expected tour mileage and make sure the tyres will easily last the distance. It is amazing how many riders don't do this. Adjust the suspension and tyre pressures to compensate for extra weight. (Refer to the tyre manufacturers' handbook, or telephone them). Pack a recommended puncture kit (and learn how to use it) or protect the tyres with UltraSeal, or similar.

Take a replacement bulb kit, which is compulsory in many European countries. In some countries riding with a dipped beam is also compulsory. Have the headlight adjusted or fit a beam deflector. Make sure there are spare fuses on the bike.
