BMW domination at the Isle of Man TT.

The Isle of Man TT is arguably the most renowned road race in the world. Attracting thousands of visitors from all over the world, this small island in the Irish Sea is the place to come to see bikes travelling at speeds approaching 200 mph on closed public roads. This year, after a week of practice sessions, racing got under way on Saturday 3rd June with the RST Superbike race.

Hutchinson Superbike victory.

Despite the variable weather cancelling several qualifying sessions, BMW riders got off to a great start, with Tyco BMW’s Ian Hutchinson claiming first place, and Smith Racing’s Peter Hickman second in the opening Superbike Race.

The S1000RR domination was evident throughout, with 28 of 69 bikes on the starting Superbike grid sporting the BMW roundel. Of these, 16 of made it into the top 25 finishers.

RL360 Quantum Superstock TT

Bolstered by their success, Hutchinson and Hickman went on to replicate this performance in the Superstock race, with Dan Kneen of Penz13 and Michael Rutter of Bathams SMT Racing following close behind, resulting in a BMW top-four lockout.  TAS Racing Tyco BMW.

Of the 28 S 1000 RR riders who started on the 67-strong grid, 17 finished in the top 25, and six in the top nine.

Hutchinson also celebrated his 16th TT win and his fifth in a Superstock race, making the most successful Superstock TT rider, and third most successful solo TT racer of all time, ahead of the great Mike Hailwood.

The TT races sees two type of 1000cc motorcycles competing - one is a Superbike which is the most elite motorcycle and the other is the Superstock bike which is similar to a motorcycle you can buy from a showroom. The simple way of telling the difference? Superbikes run black numbers and Superstocks run red numbers!

Senior TT

The Senior race began promisingly for BMW riders, with Hutchinson leading the pack, six and a half seconds ahead of second place Hickman. Unfortunately, Hutchy suffered a crash at the 27th mile marker of the second lap, an incident which saw him hospitalised with a broken left femur.

After the race had restarted, Hickman pushed hard, finishing in second place. Ten other BMW Machinery riders joined him in the top 25 finishers, including Michael Rutter of Bathams SMT Racing in fifth, and Martin Jessopp of Riders Motorcycles BMW in ninth.

HP4 Race

Also at the TT, the HP4 RACE made its UK debut, with Hickman taking it on a flying lap around the course. Footage from 16 onboard cameras allowed BMW to create a film about the stunning carbon fibre-framed superbike.

Such was the S 1000 RR domination of these three races that BMW was awarded the Manufacturers Solo Championship Award. This accolade is given annually to the overall leading manufacturer across all solo races (excluding the Lightweight and TT Zero Races) worked out on a World Championship points system.

Personal success was also prevalent at the TT. Hickman’s three second-place finishes aboard the S 1000 RR brought his TT 2017 podium total to 5, which earned him the coveted “Joey Dunlop Championship Trophy” for the best overall performance of the race week. His team, Smiths Racing, took the best team trophy.
