BSB Round 8 Cadwell Park

Kings of the Mountain

Peter Hickman continued his incredible run of form on the BWM S 1000 RR to claim ‘King of the Mountain’ honours at Cadwell while his young teammate, Lee Jackson, stepped up and delivered his first British Superbike podium.

The Party in the Park didn’t disappoint as the British Superbike Championship completed its penultimate round ahead of the title-deciding Showdown. Always a hit with fans, Cadwell Park had an air of expectation around it for the riders who knew it was one of the final chances to secure a top six birth. Peter Hickman (Smiths Racing) was the man in form after a victory at Thruxton on the BMW S 1000 RR and a hat-trick of wins at the Ulster Grand Prix, but Christian Iddon (Tyco BMW) was ready to put it all on the line for a place in the Showdown.

With the leading six never separated by more than two seconds, a convoy of riders thrilled the mass of fans who had flocked to the Lincoln circuit. Unfortunately for Hickman, he was pushed off track and forced to recover ground on the leaders. He did so with rapid progress, but was forced to settle for fourth place – only 0.2s off a podium finish after his off-track excursion.

Hickman’s Smiths Racing BMW teammate, Lee Jackson, has endured a tough start to the season but a promising sixth in Race 1 at Cadwell showed a corner had been turned. Showdown contender Christian Iddon did well to stay inside the top ten with eighth place, five positions clear of his new teammate Andrew Reid (Tyco BMW).

Cadwell was a fantastic weekend for Reid who not only made it into the Q3 session, but also scored his first British Superbike Championship points with 13th in the first race. Despite being drafted in mid-season, the former Supersport winner has adapted well to the BMW S 1000 RR and will no doubt be a regular in the points battle as the championship goes ahead.

Fans were on the edge of their seats after Race 1, but had to find a little more room to edge forward for Race 2 at Cadwell. As in the first race, many of the usual names were together at the front in an ever-changing group. Drama struck as both Jake Dixon and Shakey Byrne retired within just two laps of each other, Leon Haslam falling while battling with Peter Hickman at almost the exact same time.

The podium, and the chance to battle for victory, was now wide open. Hickman, Jackson and Ellison put their heads down and broke away from their pursuers. Surprisingly, it was the S 1000 RR of Jackson who was leading the charge to Ellison, Hickman watching his young teammate almost in awe.

After achieving their first BSB win at Thruxton, the Smiths Racing team can now boast their first double-podium with Hickman taking third. A fourth place and a third-place finish saw Hickman crowned ‘The King of the Mountain’ for taking the highest points total from the Cadwell weekend, a prestigious honour and a glorious trophy.

“Before race one I was confident and then before race two I felt something good, I didn’t want to be over-confident as it could go wrong. I am mega happy to get the podium at Cadwell Park in front of all my family, friends and the local support. " "

A fifth place finish for Christian Iddon saw him make up the ground lost during his time out injured while teammate Reid continued to impress with yet another 13th place finish. Both Martin Jessopp (Ridersmotorcycles BMW) and Jakub Smrz (PR Racing BMW) picked up good points in 12th and 14th respectively.

There are now nine riders in mathematical contention of entering the Showdown, Hickman and Iddon both chief amongst them. Hickman sits third overall with 193 points and nine podium credits while Iddon is eighth, but only eight points off the top six.
