The Program Journey:

Year 1

Five face-to-face training blocks are supported by regular workplace visits by an occupationally competent Career Programme Advisor (CPA) who will guide the workplace mentor and apprentice throughout the programme and create action plans for review at each visit, progress against Knowledge, Skills and Behaviours. The first blocks will give the learns the basic understanding and the fundamentals of motorcycle technology, building on their knowledge with theory and practical sessions. This will ensure the learner is ready for the Gateway One Assessment which occurs at the end of Year One. Learners are expected to complete an online logbook of evidence throughout the 3-year apprentice program.

Year 2

During year two, the learners are still supported by their CPA and their mentors completing their on-line logbooks, this 5 week block goes more in-depth with BMW Motorrad technology, mechanical and electrical theories and different practical tasks. We go deeper into the engine and its performance, manual and automatic gearboxes, driveline and self-adjusting suspension systems. We focus on the additional equipment fitted to our bikes like how the ABS systems work and how to read the wiring diagrams. Testing circuits and fault tracing simple faults within the different systems. Then into Gateway 2 to check on learning. This consists of different tasks to challenge each learner independently and highlight their abilities and understanding of the topics throughout the year.

Year 3

This year consists of only 3 training blocks, still supported with the CPAs and the mentors. These blocks work more with the diagnostic side of the apprenticeship. Looking at the different theories and more complexed practical tasks, each learner will complete different technical fault diagnostic task’s and find the correct repair procedure. They will be able to read the wiring diagram correctly and understand what and how each component works, and with the rest of the system via the CAN bus system. They will use the diagnostic equipment like the oscilloscope to see the different communication patterns to find the faults stored and to monitor the different systems and record these results. Working towards the End Point Assessment or ATA (Scottish / Welsh learners).
