The Blechmann R 18

A strong character with a strong name.

A renowned customiser from Austria, Bernhard Naumann (also known as Blechmann) presents his version of the Big Boxer; The Blechmann R 18.

The BMW R 18 signifies the tradition of historical BMW motorcycles like no other – paying homage to the iconic BMW R5 focusing back on the essentials and uncomplicated riding. Naumann aimed to change as little as possible on the frame and the technology, and to only use the original mounting points for the creation of the Blechmann R 18.

The Details

Without the use of sketches Naumann gathers his inspiration while working on the bike itself.

"I draw my design directly on the object using the final material. This allows me to directly respond to the requirements and to keep an eye on the proportions at all times."

The sporty single-seater is based on the original supporting structure of the rear fender, seat and pillion, and the rear light is designed by Kellermann. However, the fuel tank has been extensively modified for a narrower and sportier look, exposing the engine aesthetics even more. Additionally, it features knee cut-outs which further support the athletic line, and the original steering tube was used as the base for the stub handlebar.

Similarly to Naumann’s previous custom build on the BMW R nineT - the ‘Giggerl’, he uses a filament lamp for the headlight which dominates the front-end of the bike, adding his personalisation with subtle black paint and classic white BMW Motorrad pinstriping. In total, Naumann and his team worked around 450 hours on the R 18 project.

Defining Customisation

Defining Customisation

Naumann does not perceive his work to be that of a classic customiser:

“My work begins by removing parts of the original version until a white canvas remains. As the construction progresses, the design develops. I call this rapid-prototyping-Blechmann-style.”

Naumann generally works alone on his craftsmanship and designs. If necessary, he gets support from hand-picked professionals. "You can't do anything in this world on your own. I am more than glad to have a reliable personnel infrastructure."
